March 26—Marcellus (N.Y.) School District is set to launch a composting program to coincide with Earth Day (April 22), which will turn food waste into a nutrient-rich mulch. In April, students will start separating the waste from their lunch trays to help with the program.
For the past month the district's kitchen staff have been sorting waste to be composted. The program was originally developed as a way to cut costs. The program is estimated to save the district between $2,500 and $3,000 in annual trash-hauling costs.
