Calif. schools compete in Trash-Free Lunch Challenge

Schools challenged to reduce waste by 70%.

Nov. 5—Three Redondo Beach schools will be among 16 Los Angeles area schools that will have a big assignment this school year—to cut their lunchtime trash by 70%. They will compete in the county's second annual Trash-Free Lunch Challenge, a contest that rewards schools for reducing lunchtime trash.

The Redondo Beach Unified School District campuses competing include Beryl Heights Elementary, Birney Elementary and Washington Elementary.

The competition, sponsored by the Sanitation Districts of L.A. County (Sanitation Districts), and created by the environmental non-profit group Grades of Green, teaches kids how to reduce trash by switching to reusable lunch containers and water bottles with cloth napkins.

Students at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor will be served student-grown produce from the campus farm at dining halls this fall, M Live reports.

The dining team received its first batch of produce from UM’s on-campus farm in June, after students received the proper USDA certification to grow, harvest and deliver food to campus dining halls. In order to figure out what produce is needed, students communicate with the dining department weekly, and Michigan Dining purchases items accordingly.
