April 13—The increased number of vegetables like broccoli and jicama led Marylin Avenue Elementary School, in Livermore, Calif, to be named a silver medal winner in the Healthier U.S. School Challenge, sponsored by first lady Michelle Obama and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The school received a plaque and $1,000 for its cafeteria program. The school was recognized for its efforts to improve nutrition and physical education among students, teachers and parents. Besides healthy breakfasts and lunches the school offers family nutrition and cooking classes four times a year through Kaiser Permanente-funded program.
