Cafeteria to be made into community space

A Marquette elementary school is undergoing some renovations this summer.

Graveraet Elementary School in Marquette is upgrading their cafeteria. They are using $200,000 in grants to get new ceilings, floors, paint, renovate the kitchen and add technology. The hope is to create a multipurpose room for the community. The summer renovations have seen some delays.

"We were shooting for the start of the school year; that's probably going to be pushed back a little bit," said Marquette Area Public Schools Superintendent Bill Saunders. "Because it's not a wholesale renovation, it's more of a remodel. We still might be able to do some of this in conjunction with the start of the school year."

If the project leaks into to school year, they will have to find a new space for a temporary cafeteria. Saunders says plans will be submitted to the state for approval within the next few days.
