Breakfast in classroom helps reduce stomachaches, absences

In-class breakfast programs continue to see positive results. After recently completing a two-week pilot program, two teachers at Kansas-based Westside Elementary School cited fewer stomachaches and visits to the school nurse.

Katy Hughes, a first-grade teacher at the school, said attendance was also better. Though she typically has at least one absence per day, there was only one during the pilot program, reports The Morning Sun.

Officials say this is the first breakfast pilot program in Pittsburg Community Schools. The district will pilot in-class breakfast at the three other elementary schools next spring, and at the middle and high school levels in the fall.
