Bill aims to improve Va. farm-to-school initiative

A proposal in the Virginia legislature could make it easier for schools to purchase locally grown foods by allowing for more informal buying negotiations, reports WHSV.com.

Andrea Early, director of school nutrition at Harrisonburg City Schools in Harrisonburg, Va., said the bill would benefit students, as well as help local farms and schools create better relationships.

“It’s important to make connections with the farmers in our areas because they are able to come into our schools then and talk to kids about how food grows [and] where it comes from,” Early told the website.

The bill passed a vote by the House committee last week and now awaits a Senate vote.
