Because I started my job as a director midyear, I took the opportunity to put on a uniform and work one day with each of our cooks. As we worked, I listened to their complaints and suggestions for improvement, and observed the relationships in the kitchen. We got to know each other in a setting where they were the more experienced experts in the process, and I was their student and helper.
