Capitalizing on the popularity of breakfast, the nutrition department at Durango School District in Durango, Colo., offers a tasty opportunity to late risers. Team members load up a cart and sell grab-and-go items during morning passing periods. Within five minutes, they funnel about 100 kids through the line, says Krista Garand, supervisor of student nutrition. At one school, free and reduced-price breakfast participation has doubled, and a la carte sales from non-free-and-reduced students have skyrocketed. “We’re asking teachers to allow kids to eat food in class, which results in less nurse visits and more focus,” Garand says.
